ColdFusion Meeting Calendar

Google CalendarI have created a public Google Calendar for ColdFusion meetings. The idea I had behind this is that if you run any kind of CF meeting, whether it be online (Online CF Group), at a meeting place, UKCFUG, or just a demo'ing something on a IRC chanel you can update it here so everyone knows about it and also be able to merge it with you current calendar.

The only problem is that I'm sure that I still have to invite you to join if you want to add/edit your meetings details, but anyone can view/subscribe to it.

At the moment I've only added the next UKCFUG one for tonight so you can see it in action. If you are an event organiser (and you have a gmail/calendar accout) and you want to be able to edit drop me a line in the comments and i'll enable you to add comments.

To subscribe use one of the following links

[XML]
[iCal]

I know this might seem a little presumptuous of me - but if you have any ideas on how to have a central location for meeting details drop me a line.

ColdFusion - why not stay there

The Googls Adwords in Gmail are a thousand times better than what you get with most free email accounts but do come up with some good "targeted" links:

Cold Fusion Chalet
Discounted Easter Ski Holidays Now

Whats the best targeted ad you've had?

Google Calendar

Well to jump on the band wagon I thought I'd let everyone know for the n'th time that the Google Calendar is now online. The only thing I will say is that if you are interested get on there quick. Google have done this a few times then restricted access later, Analytics was a good example of this.

Google Calendar : CL2

Techcrunch has an depth pre alpha post about the Google Calendar CL2. Also included are quite a few screen grabs as well. Some of the features are looking quite impressive including XML and ICAL settings for the Calendar and Private Addresses. You can choose how you want your notifications as well - email, SMS (there has got to be a cost involved for this?), or pop-up.

It is only being tested by a reported 200 people so don't hold your breath on seeing this too soon.

Google RSS Reader

From the Labs Google have released an online (ajaxed) rss reader. Obviously another step towards keeping your life online and not on your PC, and it looks good.

Like Gmail, opps i'm in the UK, i should say Google Mail you can star items, group them with labels, even search RSS feeds.

If you have a Google mail(it doesn't sound right) Gmail account then its well worth a look.

I wonder how long it takes to put an Office Application online

Any friends of mine on Flickr can see the progress.

Goggle gets personal

You can now personalise your Google homepage. On the front page under the search box you can have Google display

  • Gmail
  • Stock Market
  • New York Times
  • BBC News
  • Google News
  • Weather
  • Wired News
  • Slashdot
  • Movies - U.S only
  • ..... and more
Its nice but still needs some finishing touches e.g. If you only select one item then it should stretch to fit 100% width of the page. Instead each item takes up about 30%. Also stuff like the movies is US only...arrrgghhhh!

While this is all optional it's a nice touch to Google, let just hope it stays that way.

Search engine diagram help

I didnt know where to ask this so i thought the blog would probably be best. There was a diagram showing how Google, Yahoo, Msn, Inktomi, DMOZ etc all interacted ..... in relation to each other. Does any one know the URL? Usually this would be a good GMAIL invite post but i don't have any and know doubt everyone has one now from the look of the iSnoop graphs. So the best thanks i can offer is a post with the link and you URL :o)

Confession of search engine rankings

If you are known as the "web guy" in anyway then you've probably been asked the most dreaded question: "How do i get my site to the top of Google".

Well there are 1000's of tweaks out there but i think this article really knocks a lot of basics on the head. Plus it just doesnt get to techy or go on for too long, so its a good link to post to customers.

JD_search_engine_ranking_confessions.shtml

In a nutshell it says that being found through search engines doesnt guarantee you success. Which couldn't be more true. Actually if you see my referers you'll be surprised one of my best is something like "Le Giang Sinh" or one of the other 70+ ways you can says happy new year, which was a post from last year!

The Google Browser or OS?

I've just been reading this post over at hyperorg.com/blogger/ about the Google Browser. It summarises what has been said on most sites about the accumulating businesses that Google is acquiring and how they can use them to make the "ultimate" browsing experience. The blog then goes on to say
"And it wouldn't be just a browser. It would let me work with the information I've found: Manage my photos (Picasa), manage my desktop files, translate documents (Google Languages), shop..."
If that's what Google's aiming at, they need a file manager - They have a File Manager though, called Google File System.

I think Google are close to something else here, and i agree with hyperorg.com, that it won't just be browser. I think it will be more of an online OS. From anywhere in the world i will be able to work and save my files in what will feels like a local environment via something like The GMail Drive shell extension, check my email via Gmail, i'll be able to use Google IM to contact friends, photos through Picasa, and even browse around a map of my area via Keyhole.

Its not as if all this isn't possible now (except for the Keyhole bit). All they have to do it wrap it all together for your desktop (Google Desktop/Deskbar) now and it starts piecing together.

Google Messenger

moik78.com is reporting that computer security users may have found reason to believe that Google are creating an Instant Messenger Client. Though the site has no sources of where this came from (that i can see), it goes on to say that they have found a references in the code to a new protocol "google_im://". They also found "googlemail://" which therefore might suggest that the protocol of electronic mail of Google could be intimately integrated with the one of IM.
This for now though only gets added to the speculation list of what Google are planning. Included on that list is also the Google Browser and of course the Google OS.

UPDATE: Moises from Moik78.com has left a comment explaining the reason for no source links is that they were in spanish. But has been kind enough to pass on some helpful links, thank you.

Firefox with Google Desktop search

If like me you search Google from Firefox address bar using something like "gg search" then you'll be glad to know you can do it with the desktop search. Just set up a new bookmark pointing to http://127.0.0.1:4664/search&s=1180316066?q=%s and give it a keyword - i'm using gd for Google Desktop, and there you have it.

Google Desktop

Google Desktop Search Google have moved ever closer onto the desktop with their new tool: Google Desktop

Incase you're wondering how it works(and this is in brief); after installing the app it then goes off and spends anywhere from an hour - 2 days indexing your drive (while idle). Then via a local port, http://127.0.0.1:4664/, you can search to you hearts content.

The features will no doubt be blogged everywhere, but i'll cover a few key ones here and including a few odd (time to get use to) ones as well.

  • Nearly all MS Office files including Outlook and Outlook express, AIM chats, are indexed.
  • Music Files and Images: Dispite what is said these are indexed, though only the filename. Which now means that it comes in handy to name your photos something meaninful rather than just having DSC00001.jpg
  • When searching online from Google.com you search results are integrated as well at the top. - THIS THREW ME. Mainly because i expect the top line to be News but when clicked it opened a local file.
  • It also indexes and stores page view from IE (i don't know if it does it for Firefox).
  • You can also use filetype: to help drill down your searches.
The one disapointing lack-off feature is integration with GMAIL, but there rumours that this might/might not be added later. Also lack of specifying files to search. I would LOVE to be able to search .cfm, .cfc, .html, .js etc etc files.
Apart from that, WOW installation couldn't be easier, searching is simple, what more can you want? The one big question though is....... will Adsense be integrated in as well??

Google gone intergalactic

Google have done it again. In a bid to be first they have branched out into intergalatic languages. The first to be included (and most likely only one) is Klingon.
Don't forget the other stuff Google do though:
